In January, 1896
The Liberty Vindicator, newspaper for Liberty, Liberty Co., TX , printed a story about a young woman with a small child arriving in Carbon, Eastland Co., TX. She apparently arrived on the evening train and stayed a short time at the McDaniel Hotel. She left the baby boy, about 1 yr old, behind and he was raised by the hotel owners, Evander and his wife, Miranda Jane (nee McCarty) Harwell McDaniel.

The actual event more than likely happened in late December, 1895 simply because of the time it took information to travel. Many times newspapers would cover stories from around the state and the nation which had happened weeks before.
Below is the newspaper article which I found while reading the newspapers at Newspapers.com
A
1999 query posted on the McDaniel message board at GenForum sheds some light on the McDaniel family:
"...Evander (E.V.) McDANIEL, born Dec 25 1841 in Jackson, Smith Co., Ms.
died March 7 1929 in Comanche, Stephens Co. Ok., buried at the Old
Fairlawn Cem in Comanche, Ok. Son of Alexander David McDANIEL (Sandy)
and Martha or Sarah STUBBS.
Evander married in 1863 in Ms. to Miranda
Jane McCARTY (Harwell), born Aug 8 1843 in Jackson, Smith Co., Ms. died
Jan 13 1926 in Comanche, Ok. buried at the Old Fairlawn Cem. in Comanche
by Evander. Miranda was the daughter of Hiram McCARTY and Nancy
SPRADLEY.
Evander
and Miranda moved to Robertson Co. Tx before 1867. They later lived in
Eastland Co. Tx. On the 1900 census they were living in the Chickasaw
Nation, Indian Territory (Ok)
Miranda was married to John HARWELL
who was killed in the Civil War. They had one daughter, Martha Jane.
Miranda then married Evander who raised Martha.
Evander and Miranda had 13 children of which there were 2 sets of twins that died at birth. All the children were born in Tx.
The surviving children were,
Andrew James--B--1867--D--in Amarillo
Jasper H. (Jerry)--B--1870--D--1944 in Sweetwater, Tx.
Newton (Newt)--B--1870--D--1892 in Carbon, Tx.

They also had an adopted son,
Robert Henry--B--1894--D--1975 in Bartlesville, Ok."
I wonder where little Robert Henry was during the 1900 Census.
In 1910, Stephens, OK, all the children except Henry are gone from the home.:
Robert Henry McDaniel registered for both the WWI and WWII Drafts:
I sincerely hope that Robert had a wonderful life and his young mother learned of how well he turned out. No one knows what her circumstances were and how that year of having him had gone for her. I am guessing it wasn't too well since she left him where he would be warm and protected and sure to be found. It was must have been a very hard decision on her part.
